Metal Bird

by Alex A. Kecskes
Several years ago, during a home match Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, 60 gulls or so descended into the stadium, players dive bombing and the fans. It was after the foot-long hot dogs? The ketchup-soaked french fries? Peanuts toasted? No way. They were eating the moths fluttering newborn army stadium lights.
While in the case of Trade, was that moths whenever the snack more often, our feathered friends settle for leftovers provided by fans. It is a scene repeated many times in the facilities free air throughout the country. A stadium geographical location may also contribute to the problem. For Comerica, is its proximity to the Detroit River and several other large bodies of fresh water that represented the rapid invasion of the gulls.
Across the country, angry starlings, sparrows and pigeons stadium operators are on alert, as they perch on the rafters and other structures that provide shelter, protection from natural predators and, of course, sandwiches. Unfortunately, unlike moth hungry gulls in Detroit, sparrows, starlings and pigeons generally must remain for the season, and the longer are entrenched, the more stubborn they become.
Besides being a nuisance birds cost companies much every year. Bird droppings are unsightly and require cleaning and painting equipment to remove or cover up the mess left behind. Worse, these droppings often cause damage to the building windows, ceilings, skylights, vents, rotary, and air conditioning units. These birds can also carry and transmit over 60 diseases known.
So what to do? Some resort to violence by using compressed air guns. An urban legend suggested Red Sox the Boston Red Sox, Ted Williams of a bone to the hunting season to bring his gun to Fenway Park and picking off a few pigeons. The problem with this solution is that only treats the symptom. Killing one bird species, such draconian measures simply make room for other species to nest and breed.
Fortunately, solutions, there are more humane removal of pesky birds stadiums. These birds proved methods of control are more effective to take up arms against the invaders of feathers. Products designed to kill pests of birds vary in price and scope and are divided into categories of bird deterrents and bird repellents. Among the most popular and effective deterrents to keep birds away from the stadiums are physical barriers, such as compensation, and beaks.
Compensation should not be conductive, UV stabilized and both anti-corrosion and water resistant. Peaks of birds keep birds from landing and nesting. Many come in two foot sections, so they are easy to install and maintain. Another deterrent, often specified by architects for the pigeons and larger birds, is the thread of the birds. It combines low visibility with low maintenance. Then there is the solution electric shock track systems. They are curious birds a mild electrical shock, however, do not hurt and are ideal for all varieties of winged pests. A tactics on others for bird pest dispersal of open areas is the use of aerosol mists. Bird-B-Gone makes the system ideal for stadiums, but also lets you connect up to 64 sprinklers that can be controlled individually.
Cincinnati Reds stadium operations vice president tried "everything" to pursue pigeons and starlings Club of Great American Ball Park, which opened in 2003. The problem was particularly noticeable in the stadium because most of its steel supports, painted white. After pigeons perch on the structures of the highway outside the stadium were expelled, the birds settled in the door next to the media steel of the highest level of stadium seating. Each day, the teams were sent to steam clean the park's concourses and power washing white beams. Some areas had to be monitored closely to ensure pigeon droppings are not infiltrated the stadium concession areas, which could present code violations security and making fans sick.
The stadium tried fake owls and wrapping the steel beams in textured metal. A fastball delivered by Randy Johnson in a spring training game of 2001 wiped low flying pigeon. But the only thing that worked was fine mesh netting. The secret is totally pattern interrupt the flock roosts.
The point is that in the absence of a line of 100 mph, or a shotgun, there is much more effective deterrent and repellents to keep our fine feathered friends outside sports stadiums.
