Kerala Bird Sanctuaries

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (also known as the Sanctuary Thattekad) is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the north bank of the river Periyar. The sanctuary was notified in 1983 based on a recommendation made by Dr. Salim Ali many years previously. Ali describes Thattekad in the 1930s as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, comparable only to the eastern Himalayas. The reserve has a variety of species of migratory and resident birds, including rare and Ceylon Frogmouth Peak pink rollers.

The Bird Sanctuary is 12 km from Kottayam Kumarakom bordering Lake Vembanad, and spread over 14 acres of land. This famous shrine is a refuge for migratory birds like darters, egrets, herons, teal, waterfowl, cuckoo and wild ducks, among others. You can even take a look at the storks migrating from Siberia to this place almost every year.

The bird sanctuary, Kumarakom, a paradise for ornithologists, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds as the Siberian stork, egret, dart, heron and Teal. Other common varieties like the woodpecker, skylark, crane, water hen and Parrots can also be seen here. A cruise on Lake Vembabad is the best way to experience the sanctuary. Pathiramanal, a lovely island in the lake can be accessed at boat from here.

Rare birds like the Crimson-throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Black winged Kite, the heron and night heron are also commonly sighted. Roller India, cuckoo, common snipe, pheasant, crow, jungle nightjar, kite, Gray Drongo, Malabar Trogon, woodpecker, large pied laundress, sparrow Baya, gray jungle birds, Indian Hill Myna bird robin, talkative and darts of the forest are some of the common birds found here.
